India tour of South Africa: Don’t see the point of Dhawan's inclusion in ODI team, says Saba Karim

Dhawan captained a second-string Team India in the absence of former skipper Virat Kohli & newly appointed captain Rohit in the ODIs & T20Is in Sri Lanka in July 2020 but hasn't played for the India since then.

Dhawan was not selected for the T20 World Cup in the UAE despite top performer for Delhi Capitals(DC) in IPL 2021 where he scored 587 runs at stellar average of 39.13 to finish as the 4th highest scorer.

The selectors again ignored him for the home T20Is against NZ as India opted for Rohit Sharma & KL Rahul as first choice openers with Ishan Kishan as the reserve option.

That's why Saba Karim feels that it would be of no use taking Shikhar Dhawan to South Africa if he's not going to make the final eleven for the South Africa ODIs starting in next year January 19.

“Even if Dhawan is there in the squad, will he be part of the playing XI? KL Rahul & Rohit have opened in Tests & T20s, so I think they will open in ODIs as well. So, if you are including Dhawan in the squad & not playing him, should he be in the team?

“I don’t see the point of his inclusion, what is the need? The only thing possible is the left hand-right hand combination of Rohit Sharma & Shikhar Dhawan. It has been a formidable partnership as well," Saba Karim said on the Khelneeti podcast on YouTube.
